What type of collagen does my dog need?

Collagen is a natural protein found throughout a dog's body.

Previously it was believed that a type II collagen was the main collagen type required to support joints.

However, as you can see from the illustration, dogs have a number of different collagen types supporting all the critical elements of their joints.

A dog's cartilage consists of approx. 90% type II collagen. But you can also see that collagen type X is present where the cartilage connects to bone.

Type III collagen has also been detected in cartilage and is present in greater quantities as a result of a healing response.

You can also see that ligaments, muscles and the synovial membrane do not use type II at all but are made up of type I and type III collagen.

Bone is primarily a type I collagen.

While tendons are mainly type I but also include type III and V.
